The Detroit Lakes wrestling team won their opening dual of the season on the road 49-29 over Mahnomen/Waubun in Waubun Thursday night. The Lakers got up on the scoreboard early as DL’s lightweights staked a 16-0 lead beginning with a fall at 1:13 by senior Tyler Bellefeuille in the opening 106-pound match over freshman Sam Olson. Fabyon Greer at 113-pounds and Braydon Ortloff at 120 each recorded major decisions. “We identified a lot of things we’ve got to work on, of course,” Laker Head Coach Rob Ullyott said. “Our lighter weights went out and did a good job and got us going. We’ve got to eliminate mistakes along the way.” The Cougars battled back to a 17-16 lead with three consecutive victories of their own. At 126, Shawn Neisen won by technical fall over Payton Jackson. Sequoyah Tonihka defeated Isaac Eggebraaten by fall (1:10), and Nick Syverson pinned Austin Baker in 1:53 to complete the rally. DL took the lead for good on a forfeit to senior Logan Twigg at 145 pounds. Laker sophomore Marcus Jasken pinned junior Blake Niemi at 1:16 giving the DL a 28-17 lead followed by three consecutive open matches, two for the Cougars, one for the Lakers, and DL led 40-23 in anticlimactic fashion.
Freshman Jacob Hanson earned an 8-4 decision over Cougar senior Luke Ironshield after the duo each pulled a reversal to take a one-point lead in the third period. Hanson added three late points for the win. Jerelle Lando put up the final Cougar points by fall at 3:33 over Manny Plaza cutting the Laker lead to 43-29. The heavyweight match was open for Waubun and the final six forfeit points were credited to the Lakers’ Jacob Retz. Laker results: Detroit Lakes at Mahnomen/Waubun, Waubun, Minn.
