A four-point rally in the fifth set put Detroit Lakes at match point, but East Grand Forks finished with a rally of their own scoring the final three points for a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Lakers Tuesday at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium Tuesday night. DL trailed 13-9 in the final set in a race to 15 points. Back-to-back kills by Mikayla Markuson got DL to within two, followed by a pair of Green Wave errors to tie the score. A crosscourt kill by Abby Schramel put DL on the ill at 14-13, but the Green Wave denied the Lakers a win and took a 15-14 lead serving for the match. A kill attempt by Markuson to the left baseline behind the Green Wave front row missed by inches for the final point of the match as East Grand Forks (denied the Lakers (3-10) their fourth win of the season. “It was an exciting game,” Laker head coach Lynnsey Wimmer said. “The girls really came back with a fight the last game. They played with a lot of heart.” The teams split the first four sets with East Grand Forks winning the first and third sets 27-25 and 25-15, while DL countered in set two 25-18 and set four 25-20. The first set ended in a foreshadowing moment of the final. East Grand held set point at 24-17, but the Lakers again rallied to push the set either way.
A Haidyn Gunderson block continued a seven-point Laker rally as a Green Wave error into the net tied the score 24-24. Senior Kyra Vagle was on serve as the Lakers fought back in the set. The Lakers pushed the lead to 25-24, but EGF answered to tie at 25 and two straight points, the final coming on a Laker service return that popped to the center of the net and allowed an easy Green Wave spike to end the first set 27-25. “They should hold their heads high,” Wimmer said of her team. “We haven’t seen them peak yet, which is good. We want that to come in a few more weeks. That is our goal and they are working hard to achieve it.” Laker results East Grand Forks at Detroit Lakes, Tuesday, Sept. 29 East Grand Forks 3, Detroit Lakes 2 (27-25, 18-25, 25-15, 20-25, 16-14) Kills: Markuson 17, Gunderson 8, Schramel 7.
