The Laker girls’ soccer team trailed Bemidji in the Lakes to Prairie Conference standings all season but caught the Lumberjacks Thursday night with a 3-0 shutout victory to stake claim to their second straight conference championship. Detroit Lakes finished in a three-way tie with East Grand Forks and Bemidji atop the conference but a pair of strong games late in the season keeps the conference championship in DL by goal differential. “It’s so awesome,” senior Lindsey Heinecke said. “We played as a team so well. I don’t know if I know how to explain how excited I am about this.” DL lost to Bemidji 2-1 early in the season and needed to win Thursday by two goals to earn the tiebreaker. DL lost to East Grand Forks 1-0 but defeated the Green Wave 4-2 to gain the advantage.
“This team is really gelling and coming together and this is the right time of the year to be coming that way,” Head Coach David Carter said. Anna Payne was the scoring hero putting two balls in the net in a two-minute timeframe to open scoring Thursday in the second half. Payne scored on a header off a free kick from the left of the goal at 51:08 with assists to Kyley Foster and Halle Jordan for the game-winner. Payne scored on a cross from the right side at 52:57 with an assist to Foster. Foster scored an insurance goal at 61:21 on an assist from Jordan Lundberg. “We have so many new girls and some girls who have never played soccer before and everybody is stepping up,” Heinecke said. “I’m just so proud of everyone.” The Lakers improved to 10-3-2 and have won five straight games, three by shutout. [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"1186694","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"367","typeof":"foaf:Image","width":"480"}}]] Confidence is high on the Laker sideline despite some nagging injuries forcing new faces on to the pitch each week. “Especially, after today, we’re so confident,” said Heinecke. “If we play as a team and play how we know we can, even though we’re missing some of our best players to injuries, no one can stop us. I think we can keep going.” DL lost Annie Mettert in the second half after a collision near the sideline. Mettert was helped off the field but should be able to return for the playoffs from an ankle injury. Lauren Tschider, Mikayla Avila and Hailiegh Wenger were also injured or under the weather and did not play Thursday. “We’ve got key players knocked out,” Carter said. This year’s team has depth, something that Coach Carter has had the luxury of having, as opposed to other seasons. Numerous Lakers have come off the bench to make contributions throughout the season. “This year I’m pretty confident in putting players out,” said Carter. “They’re playing good.” East Grand Forks plays West Ottertail United in their regular season finale and can tie the Lakers’ 7-2 conference record but it will be on paper only as DL sealed the win and now look forward to the section playoffs and a potential state berth, something that has been on the mind of team members for a few weeks. “A lot more realistic now…it’s always been a goal,” said Heinecke. “I don’t think a Detroit Lakes girls’ soccer team has ever gone to state so we want to make that history.” DL is 8-2-1 in section 8A play this year and will wrap up the regular season at Fergus Falls Monday, Oct. 6. East Grand Forks and DL will vie for the top seed in 8A north. The Green Wave are 9-2 and both teams are separated by six QRF points in the state rankings. DL’s win over 3A Bemidji will boost their number and the final game of the season could be the difference between the top and two seeds.          Bemidji at Detroit Lakes, Thursday, Oct. 2 DL    0 3 - 3 BEM 0 0 - 0 Goals:DL Anna Payne (Kyley Foster, Halle Jordan) 51'DL Anna Payne (Foster) 53'DL Foster (Jordan Lundberg) 61' Shots: DL 22, BEM 27Saves: DL 17, BEM 6Corners, DL 4, BEM 5 Tweets by @DLNewspapersThe Laker girls’ soccer team trailed Bemidji in the Lakes to Prairie Conference standings all season but caught the Lumberjacks Thursday night with a 3-0 shutout victory to stake claim to their second straight conference championship.
