Although it wasn’t golf-like weather during the Detroit Lakes Lakeview Tournament Monday, the Lakers’ first-place score of 277 on the Par 64 course was normal. Three Lakers shot the top three scores, with Ben Mallow leading the way with a 67, followed by Michael Herzog’s 68 and Tanner Schnathorst’s 69. “This was a good start for our team,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “We were able to play 18 of our kids in the tournament, as well.” Eighth grader Ben Unruh finished tied for sixth with a 73, while Austin Dodd shot a 74. Isaac Cihak, who played on the second DL team, also carded a 74.
“All three of those guys (Mallow, Herzog and Schnathorst) are all capable of going low,” Gorden said. “The big thing early on in the season we haven’t been able to work on our putting and chipping as much, and on this course, that’s what you need to do well on.” Second place was West Fargo with a 308. Gorden hopes the tournaments scheduled Wednesday at Pequot Lakes is played, but is threatened to be cancelled due to inclement weather. Perham also is scheduled to host an invite Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course.
