The Detroit Lakes football team (2-0) heads into Friday's home game versus Fergus Falls (1-1) with a state ranking of No. 10 in the latest Class 4A polls.  DL received votes in early polling and moved into the top 10 after week two losses by No. 3 So. St. Paul (28-27 to Park of Cottage Grove) and No. 9 Mankato East (35-10) to Mankato West. The Lakers and Fergus Falls square off for the first time since September of 2005, a 29-28 Otters' victory in Fergus Falls.
First-year Otters' head coach Richard Risbrudt decided to throw all the cards on the table with 23 seconds remaining in the game. Fergus had completed an 80-yard touchdown scoring drive in 1:13 to pull within one point of the Lakers, who also had to dig out from a 21-0 halftime deficit to eventually take a 28-21 lead late in the fourth quarter. Risbrudt’s decision was to end the last game of the long-time rivalry going for two. Senior quarterback Andrew Larson connected on a pass in the right side of the end zone for the conversion and ultimately the 29-28 Otter victory.  Detroit Lakes defeated Fergus Falls the prior year in a 28-14 win at Mollberg Field. Trailing 14-0 and in danger of dropping to 0-2 on the season, the Lakers scored 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, while derailing the Otter offense which was hot in the first half, to pull off the 28-14 win to even their record at 1-1.  DL found a weakness on the Otter front, running around left end the majority of the fourth quarter. Senior Shad Tappe found aa hole on the left side scampering for a 22-yard TD, the eventual game-winner, giving the Lakers their first lead 21-14.  Frazee game bumped to 8 p.m. Kickoff for Friday nights was moved to 8 p.m. due to expected heat and humidity. Parents are asked to arrvie by 7:15 p.m. for parents night.  Frazee (0-2) hosts the No. 6-2A Ottertail Central Bulldogs (2-0). The Bulldogs are coming off a 57-0 whitewashing of Osakis at home last week. The Hornets are coming off a widely-publicized loss to Staples-Motley. The Cardinals ended a 39-game losing streak with the 24-14 win over Frazee in Staples last Friday. No. 4 Bombers look to stay undefeated Waubun is ranked No. 4 in Class 9-man and will put a 2-0 record on the line tonight, Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. versus Clearbrook-Gonvick (1-1). The Bears lost a 52-44 thriller in four overtimes to Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal last week in Ulen. The Bombers needed an overtime two-point scramble by quarterback Peyton Syverson for the conversion and a 41-40 overtime victory over Stephen-Argyle in Argyle last week. Check back for coverage of the Waubun/Clearbrook-Gonvick game late Thursday evening.
