The Detroit Lakes swimming and diving girls continued their strong push to start the season with a third place finish at the Park Rapids Invitational Saturday.

The Lakers finished behind Brainerd, a Section 8AA team and 6A’s Melrose Area.

"We walked away with lots of hardware,” DL head coach Carol McCarthy said. “We finished third overall, which was another great feat. This was one of our best placings at this particular invite.”

The Lakers scored 386.5 points to 562 from Brainerd and Melrose’s 461 in the seven-team meet. Brainerd senior Hannah McKeag captured two individual titles and was part of a winning relay to lead the Warriors to first place.

DL had two event winners: Seventh-grader Jennifer Tracy has made a splash on varsity this season and won the 200-Individual Medley in a time of 2:25.39; Sophomore Emma Disse scored 221.25 points for the diving title in another strong meet for DL divers.

“Our divers were in good form and gave us a good shot of points with all of them finishing in the top five,” said McCarthy.

Thia Olds placed third with 193.5; Lexi Yliniemi was one point back with a score of 192.5 in fourth place and Jackson Hegg was fifth scoring 182.85.

Tracy added a second place finish in the 100-butterfly swimming a time of 1:03.13.

Detroit Lakes was the benefactor of having swimmers score in each of the 12 events and are in full swing when it comes to the competition part of being in the pool.

“What was really fun to see in this meet was the racing,” said McCarthy. “It's the first meet the racing aspect was a factor - getting to that wall fast. We've been working on that a lot in practice."

That aspect of swimming varies from event to event.

“For the 50 free, the finish is affected by the start and the turn. In the 500, it's about pacing. In the relay, it's about staying ahead, catching up or beating the clock. We had all of that and more. We aren't totally in shape yet, but the girls' recovery time after each race is getting better. Our meet schedule is pretty rigorous the next few weeks and we still have to put in the training yards. The main thing is to come out healthy and stronger. I have no doubt with this group of girls that they'll keep on that track.”

Junior Clara Livermore was the 100-breaststroke runner-up swimming 1:14.37.

Freshman Sydney Gulon placed second in the 500-freestyle, an event she qualified for state in last season. Gulon swam a time of 5:34.85. Her 30th place state time last season was 5:32.58.

DL had two third place relay finishes.

Tracy swam the first leg and Gulon anchored the 400-freestyle relay team with sophomore Ella Henderson and junior McKenna Krengel in a time of 3:58.84.

Freshman Josie Retz led off the 200-Medley relay with Livermore, Tracy and Gulon backing her up for a third place time of 2:01.10.

The Lakers are back in action Tuesday, Sept. 22 in Moorhead in a triangular with the Spuds and Fergus Falls at 6 p.m.
