DETROIT LAKES - The Laker girls soccer team is riding a two-game winning streak after wins at Watertown-Mayer 3-2 behind Kyley Foster’s first career hat trick and a 9-0 walloping of West Ottertail United Thursday at Rotary Fields. Foster scored in the 11th minute with a tap-in right in front of the goal in a game Friday before the holiday to put DL up on Watertown-Mayer 1-0. DL found early success in a new offensive formation, but it did not last. The Royals answered minutes later and took a 2-1 lead late in the first half. “We tried a new formation and that was a mistake,” Head Coach David Carter said. “Coaches make mistakes, players make mistakes; we played with it for the first half.” Detroit Lakes was dealt a blow for the game and the season when starting keeper Jordan Lundberg was taken down and rolled breaking her collarbone. Lundberg had been playing with an injury coming into the contest. “Soccer is a physical game,” Carter said. The Lakers returned to their normal formation leading to Foster’s two second half goals for the 3-2 victory. She scored one on an impossible angle off a free kick by Addie Kay Johnson. “She's (Foster) very fast, as is Anna Payne up front. Kylie just needs to get the accuracy, so she isn't putting it where the goalkeeper is. They have a tendency to make the keeper look good. They’re under pressure.” Carlblom starred with Foster as the Royals threw everything at the Lakers in the second half trying to tie the score. Watertown-Mayer outshot the Lakers 24-11 forcing Carlblom to make 21 saves, some of the amazing variety. “In the last 10 minutes, they threw everything at us and had everyone up there.” Carter noted the stellar play of the defense: Carlblom, Johnson, Jordyn Peterson and Annie Mettert. “The hero has to be Payton,” Carter said. “There were balls shot across there off the tips of her fingers and the crossbar. I was truly impressed; she came of age in that game.”
