Detroit Lakes and Park Rapids proved the Mid-State Conference swimming and diving race will be as close as the first relay and the final score as the Panthers and Lakers tied with 425 team points to share the Laker Invitational championship Saturday. Both top relay teams swam 1:53.12 in the opening race of the day each scoring 29 points. The B relay teams were fourth and fifth place with the Panther foursome finishing three seconds faster. Laker senior Jared Olson erased a two-point deficit by winning the 200-freestyle in 1:58.54, the only swimmer to crack the two-minute mark. A quick and intensive start to the meet was a big burst to kicking off the second half of the season. The holiday break extended from before Christmas to 10 days into January for the swim team. “We had some good times, but even more importantly, the boys were able to compete after not having a meet since December 19,” Laker head coach Rian Heimark said.
Zane Freeman won the diving competition outscoring runner-up Spencer Fritze of Park Rapids 220.70 – 202.65. Austin Gedrose, Edward Johnson and Jordan French had fourth, sixth and eighth place finishes, respectively. The Laker foursome scored 41 diving points to 32 for the Panthers. Jake Anderson won the 100-butterfly finishing four seconds in front of the pack in 1:06.56. Olson picked up his second win of the day taking the 100-backdstroke in 1:00.19, followed by teammate Caleb Howard in second place (1:05.41). The meet came down to the final event – the 400-freestyle relay. Park Rapids held a four-point advantage 377-373. The Laker quartet of Anderson, Tanner Olson, Howard and Olson won the event in 3:42.33 to score 32 points. Park Rapids A relay team placed second 37-hundredths of a second behind, more importantly six points back scoring 26. With both B teams holding important points, the Lakers led by two points. Park Rapids B relay team swam 4:09.05 for fourth place and 22 team points. The Laker B team salvaged the meet stalemate finishing in 4:12.76 for fifth place, 20 points and a knotted final score of 425 each. Bemidji placed third with a team score of 365.
