The Detroit Lakes boys’ swimming and diving team placed second at the Otter Invitational in Fergus Falls Saturday.

The host Otters won the meet with 565 points to the Lakers’ 459.

“I was very pleased with the way our boys performed at the meet,” said Laker head coach Rian Heimark. “I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the team, and they showed that we definitely have something to work with this season.”

The Lakers got top finishes from their team leaders in four events.

Senior Jared Olson won both the 100-backstroke (1:00.91) and the 200-individual medley (2:17.44).

Sophomore Zane Freeman won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 236.10. Austin Gedrose was third with 169.50 points. Freeman had an excellent day as part of the runner-up 200-medley relay team with Olson, Jake Anderson and Caleb Howard and the runner-up 200-freestyle relay with Quinn Bakken, Anderson and Ethan McCullough.

Howard got the Lakers first event win of the year in the 200-freestyle swimming 2:05.74.

The meet was a three-team race with Park Rapids scoring 425 to finish 34 points behind Detroit Lakes. Thief River Falls (93), Perham (81) and Morris (46) were well behind the Otters, Lakers and Panthers.

“The entire team showed a drive that I was thrilled to see,” said Heimark. “Everyone stepped up for the first meet, and I now have a better feel for what is to come during the season. It is going to be fun to see what the team is capable of doing once they get in shape.”

Fergus Falls' senior Mike Mortenson was the meet standout for the Otters winning two individual events and a member of two winning relay teams.

The swimming and diving home opener is next up for the Lakers this Thursday, Dec. 19 against the Moorhead Spuds, 6 p.m. at the DLCCC.
