Lakers teams do well in home tourney over weekend

The Northwest Soccer Tournament was held last weekend at the Detroit Lakes Rotary Fields, with plenty of action from the local striker teams. The U-18 girls’ team played all the way to the title game, before losing to East Grand Forks 3-1, after they topped Fergus Falls 9-0 Friday and losing to EGF 4-0. In the playback rounds, the Laker U-18 girls downed the younger DL squad 5-0, while earning a berth in the title game with a convincing 4-1 win over Thief River Falls.
The U-17 Laker boys’ team finished first, after winning over Crookston 8-3, losing to East Grand Forks 3-2, but prevailing in the finals over the Green Wave 3-0. In the 8-3 win over Crookston, two goals were scored each by Sam Bergren, Brady Crawford and Mark Shipman, while Wyatt McConkey and Bryant Windels each added the other tallies. In DL’s 3-2 loss, the Lakers took a 2-1 lead in the first half on goals by Bergren and Colton Friesen, with assists going to Crawford. But EGF scored the next two goals to force the second game, in which Crawford notched the natural hat trick with three straight goals in the 3-0 win. The U-10 Laker boys also took the title. “The players played hard all day in the high humidity,” said coach Duane Strand. “If this team stays together throughout their school years, they will bring many victories to Detroit Lakes.” Assistant coach Hilary Furuseth coached most of the tournament for the U-10 boys.
