The Detroit Lakes girls swimming and diving team placed third in a seven-team field at the Bemidji Invitational Saturday.

The Lakers scored 356 team points, trailing runners-up Bemidji by a mere seven points. The Moorhead Spuds won the meet with 444.

The Lakers are prepping for the biggest meet of the season, so far, Saturday’s True Team Section 8A meet in Warroad. Last year, the Lakers placed second by 10 points to Bemidji. The meet was decided in the final race. DL earned a trip to State True Team when Bemidji declined to attend state prior to the meet.

“The team is looking forward to True Team,” Laker head coach Carol McCarthy said. “After making the trip down to the state meet last year as second-place finishers, it's been one of their team goals to win the section meet this year.  As long as we all show up physically and mentally we have a great shot at reaching our goal. It's a total team effort and it will come down to a few points. The girls are super fired up for this meet.”

Last Saturday’s result with the Lumberjacks and the seven-point differential sets up a testy rematch in Warroad that could again come down to the last race.

Emma Disse put up another diving win at the Bemidji Invite scoring 408.45 points. Her closest competition was teammate Lexi Yliniemi with 402.95. Jackson Hegg placed fourth to put three Lakers in the top four with 156.65 points from the judges.

Seventh-grader Jennifer Tracy continues to impress with a runner-up finish in the butterfly (1:03.13), and a third place mark in the individual medley (2:22.70).

Freshman Sydney Gulon continued her consistent performances with a runner-up finish in the 500-freestyle (5:32.12) and a fifth place mark in the 50-free sprint race (26.62), the second Laker to touch after Ella Henderson finished in third place (26.28).

Clara Livermore was the runner-up in the 100-breaststroke swimming 1:14.43.

DL had two top three relay finishes. Gulon, Livermore, Tracy and Henderson swam 1:57.73 to place second in the 200-medley. Henderson, Tracy, Kenna Krengel and Gulon placed third in the 400-freestyle with a time of 3:57.92.
