Coming off only their second loss of the season last week, the No. 10-3A Lakers boys basketball team was certainly motivated to give their next opponents a rough matchup and Pequot Lakes found that out scoring only six points in the second half on the losing end of a 66-27 blowout at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium Tuesday evening. “We had a little meeting yesterday before practice,” Laker head coach Robb Flint said. “We didn’t have our mental preparation. It wasn’t there for a couple of guys. We didn’t play as physical and with the level of toughness we needed to, so I knew we were going to come out tonight and lay it on somebody, or at least, play physical and they were going to have to match it.” The Class 2A Patriots did not have the numbers or height to matchup against a fired up Laker team. Ben Hokanson, Trey Lyngaas and Briton Thompson used their size down low to DL’s advantage, while the frontcourt players pressed heavily in the backcourt after made baskets to pump up a 15-point advantage at the half 36-21. Christian Hedstrom scored 12 of his game-high 14 points in the first half on four long balls. Hokanson scored all 10 of his points in the opening frame. Pequot Lakes got quick buckets from Jack Kreitz and Hunter Larson to open scoring in the second half, but were answered quickly by Lyngaas, Corbin Duncan and Hedstrom. Lyngaas was the benefactor of a ball tipped when Hokanson was able to reach over and from behind a Patriot rebounder and tip the ball out of his hands, negating a rebound, to a waiting and wide open Lyngaas.
Hedstrom got his final bucket in transition and set up Lyngaas on Pequot’s next possession off a Hokanson block. Duncan scored two buckets using his quickness to get open. He had nine points in limited playing time. Duncan has been near the top of the scoresheet consistently. “For any kid learning to play basketball, not many kids have a mid-ranged jumper in high school. He (Duncan) has it. He’s really hard to guard because he can get his shot off whenever he wants. He can dribble to his spot, elevate and hit that jump shot. Not a lot of kids can do that in high school and they’re finding out he’s really hard to guard and he’s knocking it down.” Larson scored the Patriots’ final basket of the game with more than 10 minutes to play. The Lakers ended the game on an 18-0 lead making wholesale changes from the bench. DL used the entire bench and employed multiple five for five substitutions getting 13 players on the scoresheet, including juniors Sam Priem, Jacob Pazdernik, Jacob Richter and sophomore Adam Daggett. Richter had two blocks late in the game. “How fast we played and how many layups we got, I think it really wore on them in the second half. To hold them to only six points in a half. It was almost us scoring so many layups being draining on them that they just kept turning it over on the other end.” DL improves to 13-2 on the year and 6-1 in conference play with three Mid-State games remaining. DL looked and played like a refocused team Tuesday night learning from the overtime loss in Crosby. The Rangers kept pace a half-game back of DL with a win at Park Rapids 55-39. Noah Gindorff scored 14 points to lead C-I. The Rangers are 5-1 in the Mid-State and 11-4 overall. Some of the guys need to look themselves in the mirror. They’ve got to come and work every game. Nothing is going to be given to them.” DL has Park Rapids twice and winless Wadena-Deer Creek left on the conference schedule. Crosby-Ironton plays Staples-Motley twice, Wadena-Deer Creek and Pequot Lakes, three of four at home. Tuesday's game was the first of a four-game homestand for the Lakers with Little Falls coming to the Ralph Friday night, Jan. 23 in a Section 8-3A matchup. “We have to focus on Little Falls. We can’t have any more setbacks like we had.” The Flyers are 9-7 overall and 2-3 in section games. DL has won all four of their section games this season.
