Senior Maddie Herzog shot her best round of the season and the streaking Laker girls golf team erased a day one deficit to win big at the Pequot Lakes Invitational at Crosswoods Golf Course in Crosslake Wednesday, May 2.
“It was good today,” said Herzog. “I started off slow with a couple of bogeys, but luckily, I was able to turn it around towards the end of the front nine and made a couple birdies.”
Herzog shot a one-under 70 shaving seven strokes off her day one score (77) to claim medalist honors for the third time in three meets.
“On the back I was able just to stay consistent and made a couple birdies,” she said.

Herzog was the lone golfer to break par over the two-day tournament. She won by four strokes.
Shelby Busker and Anna Cihak put three Lakers in the top five finishes with Busker shooting 75 (+4) after an opening round 77 to place fourth overall (152), a stroke behind the Bemidji duo of Taylor Offerdahl (75 76 - 151) and Abbie Kelm (74 77 - 151).
Cihak opened with an 81 and finished with a career-best round of 74 (+3) to claim fifth place.
“We all played really well and it helped that it finally wasn't windy,” said Herzog. “Shelby played well today and 75 is great for not having any birdies. Anna was able to come in with her lowest score ever, so to have three of us in the low to mid seventies is a great confidence boost for all of us.”
McKenna Mallow was the fourth scoring Laker with back-to-back, consistent days shooting matching rounds of 90.
“I know McKenna is trying hard to break 90 and she will get there soon,” said Herzog. “McKenna (Burhans) and Emily (Larson) were able to both break 100, so overall, we played well as a team.”
Burhans recorded rounds of 94 and 98 for a total score of 192. Larson bounced back from an opening day 105 to shoot 99 (204) to complete Laker scoring.
