DETROIT LAKES - Sam Champa scored four touchdowns and rushed for over 100 yards in a 42-7 homecoming victory for No. 4-4A Detroit Lakes over East Grand Forks Friday night at Mollberg Field. The Lakers blew the game open early scoring on four of their five first half drives. “I thought we came out and got first downs,” Head Coach Flint Motschenbacher said. “We just had to clean some things up a bit once we got to the quarter. The backs ran a little harder and we eventually got it going.”
Champa capped a nine-play 71-yard drive to open the game scoring from 33 yards out and a 7-0 lead at 7:56 of the first quarter. At 3:32, Forrest Schleske scored on a 15-yard run. The Lakers moved 55 yards in three plays. On the first play of the second quarter, Champa scored around the end from 29 yards out for a 21-0 lead. The fourth Laker drive stalled on fourth down at the Green Wave three-yard line. Christian Hedstrom hit Champa from 34 yards away with 1:11 to play in the half to make the score at the break 28-0. Ryan Cihak ended the opening drive of the second quarter intercepting Trevor Selk at the Laker 23-yard line. East Grand Forks recorded four first downs in the opening 24 minutes. The Green Wave bounced back after halftime taking the opening kick and marching down the field on a 16-play 60-yard drive. Jordan Young scored from the four to cut the Laker lead to 28-7. The drive took 8:27 off the clock. East Grand Forks got five of their nine first downs on that drive. Detroit Lakes had 10 first downs but did not need to methodically move the ball down the field scoring easily and from all over the field. DL answered quickly on a four-play, 60-yard drive and Champa’s fourth score of the game on a 24-yard run and the lead was 35-7. DL added a final tally 1:20 into the fourth quarter on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Hedstrom to Cihak. “Our balance is pretty good. We can run it and we showed that we can throw it too.” Kicker Luke Payne was a perfect 6-6 in point after tries. Hedstrom completed 7-10 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Champa rushed 11 times for 111 yards and three touchdowns and caught one pass for 34 yards and a score. Ryan Cihak eclipsed the century mark again with four grabs for 102 yards and a touchdown.
