Mallow top 15 at State Junior

McKenna Mallow of Detroit Lakes finished in the top 15 at the weather-shortened Minnesota State Junior Girls' Championship at LeSueur Country Club Tuesday, July 13.

Mallow shot an opening round of 8-over par, 81 to finish tied for 15th place with Ally Chan of Excelsior, Greta McArthur of Fargo and Samantha Youngquist of Eden Prairie.

Mallow recorded birdies on two of the five par-5 holes on the course: the 438-yard ninth and the 410-yard 16th.

Perham’s Mallory Belka, the 2021 Class AA state champion, finished one stroke back (+9, 82) in a three-way tie for 19th place and a finish in the championship flight.

The top 20 scores and ties were to contend for the championship on Wednesday, but the second round was suspended at 9:19 a.m., and then canceled at 10:36 a.m., due to inclement weather in the area. Winners for each flight were determined from the first round scores.

Detroit Lakes’ Laura Syltie (+16, 89) finished in the tie for 11th place in the first flight and a share of 39th place overall.

Olivia Salonek of Roseville claimed the title by one stroke over Camille Kuznik of Orono. Salonek won with a 3-under par round of 70 to Kuznik’s 71 (-2). Lauren Contreras of Maple Grove was the only other golfer to break par finishing third at 72 (-1).
