Boys fifth, girls sixth at 25th DL Invite

Ryan Bergum led the Laker boys and Mady Gerdes paced the DL girls to respective fifth and sixth place team finishes at the 25th annual Detroit Lakes Nordic Ski Invitational Thursday, Jan. 10 at Maplelag Resort in Callaway.

Bergum placed 21st overall in a field of 56 crossing the finish in a time of 28:19.2.

The race was a continuous pursuit, starting with classic style and a change to skate at the halfway point of the race.

John Bergum was the second Laker to cross in 26th place (28:38.9), followed by Aaron Oakes in 30th; Jacob Trout in 34th (29:47.1), Noah Borah in 38th (30:23.2) and Casey Parks in 45th (31:20.5).

Nick Youso of Bemidji was the race medalist winning in a time of 24:34.6. His Lumberjacks took the team title scoring 382 points to defeat Little Falls by two points in a tight race. DL scored 293 to finish ahead of Alexandria, Trek North and Fergus Falls.

MADY GERDES

The Laker girls scored 187 points to place above Fergus Falls. Gerdes skied a time of 39:46.8 to finish in 52nd place ahead of a pack of teammates from 54th to 58th place in Eleni Schmitz (40:33.6), Emma Teiken (41:42.6), Lexi Gerdes (41:48.0), Rena McLeod (45:55.7) and Lexi Lundeen (49:13.4).

Kinley Prestegard of Bemidji won the girls’ race in 28:04.7 and completed a sweep of the team competitions with the Lumberjacks defeating runners-up Brainerd 389 to 361.

The Laker ski teams complete next at Andes Tower Hills at the Alexandria Invitational Tuesday, Jan 15.
