Detroit Lakes had only two changes to section realignments for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons after the adjustments were announced by the Minnesota State High School League Thursday, April 5.
The boys tennis team will move up to Class AA next season joining the girls team that has been playing there the past few seasons.
The biggest change comes in girls golf where the Lakers were moved by the league to Class AAA. Detroit Lakes girls golf has made 11 state appearances in AA placing in all 11 with seven championships, two runners-up finishes and two years finished in third place.
Team reaction to the change will be shared in next week’s season preview.
In boys and girls basketball, St. Cloud Tech is moving into Section 8AAA, filling the vacancy left by Fergus Falls’ transition to 8AA. Detroit Lakes will also lose section rivalry games with the Otters in baseball (8AA), softball (8AA) and football (8AAA). Section 8AAAA football is now only a five-team division with Detroit Lakes, Little Falls, ROCORI and Willmar remaining. Grand Rapids is a new entrant. St. Cloud Apollo moved to 8AAAAA.
Four sports are affected at Frazee with teams moving from Section 6A to Section 8AA.
Both golf teams, softball and boys basketball will make the change.
All Lake Park-Audubon sports remain the same.
