The 10th annual Poles and Holes Fishing Derby coming right up.
The Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club event is Saturday, Feb. 8. Fishing lines will drop at noon on Little Detroit Lake, according to a news release. Gates open at 9 a.m. with the derby running from noon to 3 p.m.
Though thin ice has forced some area events to move or reschedule, Poles and Holes organizers say their event will go on as planned.
"Ice and snow conditions are good on Little Detroit," they wrote in a Jan. 25 Facebook post. "We have 15+ inches of ice. We are making some adjustments to our layout to minimize the number of vehicles on the ice."
This year’s top prize, out of $40,000 in prizes available, is an 8-by-17-foot Pro Series III Ice Castle fish house, according to the release. Other fishing derby prizes include cash, coolers, event tickets, sporting gear and more. Every legal fish caught is eligible for a prize.
A separate $10 per ticket raffle is held in conjunction with the derby; prizes include a John Deere riding lawn mower with a snowblower attachment and chains, wicker gas fire pit table, a kayak, a Stihl chainsaw, Poles and Holes bean bag set and more, according to the release.
The Poles and Holes fishing derby is part of the opening weekend of the 10-day long Polar Fest in Detroit Lakes. Other events associated with the derby are the pre-party at Hub 41, 7 p.m. Feb. 7. The post-party is at Holiday Inn, beginning at 3 p.m. following the derby.
Ticket are, $35 in advance and $40 on ice (a second line can be purchased for $20), and are available at Lakeland General Store in Dunvilla; and Lakes Sport Shop, Quality Bait, North Shore Gas and Bait and County 6 Tesoro all in Detroit Lakes.
