Pequot Lakes sweeps at Detroit Lakes

Patriots break open a close first game to win 6-2; earn sweep 16-1 in second game.

Pequot Lakes defeated Detroit Lakes 6-2 and 16-1 in a Mid-State Conference softball doubleheader sweep Thursday, May 6, at Snappy Park.

The Patriots held a slim 2-1 edge after four innings in the opener and broke open the close game with a four-run, fourth inning.

Maddy Bellanger got DL on the board in the first inning with a two-out double. She scored on a single by Rachel Kasowski.

Pequot Lakes loaded the bases in the fifth with two out and scored on a walk, a hard grounder through Laker shortstop Siri Vagle, and a two RBI single down the third base line by Rita Ganley to bring in two runners and a 6-1 lead.

Sydney Borgmann singled with two away in the bottom half of the fifth and took advantage of a pair of Patriot errors to score the Lakers’ second run.

Pequot Lakes retired the Lakers in order in the final two frames.

Patriot starter Kaitlyn Geschwill pitched four innings of no-hit ball in the nightcap and got 16 runs of support to finish the game by mercy rule.

Detroit Lakes’ Sydney Haus reached on an error with one away in the second inning and came around to score DL’s lone run.

Pequot Lakes improved to 11-4 overall.

The Lakers (2-8) will travel to Perham (2-3) for two games Monday, May 17.
