Baseball: Detroit Lakes plays to a cancelation against EGF, splits with Aitkin

DETROIT LAKES – The Detroit Lakes baseball team bounced back from its second loss of the season with a dominating win over Aitkin to split Tuesday’s doubleheader.

The Gobblers took game one 2-1 before the Lakers rolled 11-3 in game two.

Jacob Thomas got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with a one-out double. It scored Christian Solberg and Jordan Tucker to give Detroit Lakes a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, Mason Omberg scored on a passed ball. The Lakers took a 5-0 lead later in the inning on an error by the Aitkin right fielder. Bradly Swiers and Christian Solberg both scored on the play.

Aitkin got three runs back in the top of the third inning before Kyler Johnston scored on a passed ball to put the Lakers ahead 6-3. In the fourth inning, Detroit Lakes added three more runs, which was highlighted by a Grady Kirchner RBI single.

The Lakers officially put the game out of reach with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Brock Okeson scored on a passed ball before Swiers drove in Omberg with a sacrifice fly to make it 11-3.

On the mound, Jacob Thomas allowed two earned runs in five innings. He struck out two batters and walked six to earn the win. Noah Rieber and Jordan Tucker each threw one of the final two innings to close out the victory.

Aitkin stymied Detroit Lakes’ bats in game one. The Lakers recorded one run on six hits in the 2-1 loss.

The Gobblers scored runs in the top of the second and fifth innings before the Lakers sparked a comeback. Kirchner cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Swiers got on base with a one-out walk. He advanced to second on a fielder’s choice before Aitkin intentionally walked Tucker. Thomas flew out to center field to end the game.

Detroit Lakes is 8-2 on the season after Tuesday’s doubleheader. On Wednesday afternoon, the Lakers played 4.5 innings against East Grand Forks before thunderstorms canceled the remaining innings. Detroit Lakes trailed 4-1, but because the two teams couldn’t finish five innings, the game did not count.
