BRAINERD – The Detroit Lakes boys golf team got a final test before the Section 8-3A championships kick off next week.
The Lakers tied for sixth place out of 24 teams at the Brainerd Invitational at the Legacy on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Nick Tobkin finished in the top 10 and four strokes off the lead.
Tobkin went to the turn one-over-par after eight consecutive pars on the front nine. He started the back nine with a birdie on No. 10 and a par on No. 11. After a couple of bogeys, Tobkin birdied No. 15 to finish with a four-over-par 72.
Eighth-grader Carter Whitworth also had an impressive back nine. After a birdie on No. 9, he made six par putts in seven holes to turn in a score of 75. Freshman Tyler Stensgard was one stroke behind Whitworth. He made birdies on Nos. 6 and 15.
Eighth-grader Lawsen Justesen (80), junior Logan Schons (81) and senior Jack Syltie (83) rounded out the day for Detroit Lakes. Justesen and Schons each made one birdie, while Syltie eagled No. 9.

The Lakers finished with their lowest team score of the season at 303. Eastview (289), Spring Lake Park (293), Cloquet (295), Chaska (298) and Buffalo (301) completed the top-five team scores. Eastview’s Joey Rohlwing won the event with a two-under-par 68.
