Boys golf: Stensgard aces to cap off Lakers' 28th consecutive Mid-State championship

The Detroit Lakes boys golf team won its 28th straight Mid-State Conference title on Monday at the Detroit Country Club.

DETROIT LAKES – Freshman Tyler Stensgard put the finishing touches on a celebratory day at the Detroit Country Club.

While most golfers’ last shot of the day finds the bottom of the cup, Stensgard’s came from the 17th tee box. He sank a hole-in-one to finish his round 11-over-par as the Lakers cruised to their 28th consecutive conference championship.

Sophomore Nick Tobkin paced the Lakers with a two-over-par 74 and a stroke off of first place. He shot a one-under front nine with birdies on Nos. 6 and 7. After bogeys on four of the first five holes on the back nine, Tobkin made par on the final four holes.

Eighth-grader Lawsen Justesen notched a top-five finish with a seven-over-par 78. He made a birdie on No. 2 before making par on seven back-nine holes.

The Lakers had their top four players finish inside the top eight on Monday. Junior Logan Schons overcame a tough end to the front nine with three birdies and a par to end the back nine. He finished 10-over-par with an 81. Stensgard was right behind Schons in eighth place.

Senior Jack Syltie finished 12-over-par despite birdies on Nos. 2 and six. He also made par on four of the last five holes. Freshman Tommy Suckert also Made a birdie on No. 2 on his way to an 87.

Freshman Carter White of Staples-Motley won the individual conference championship with the medalist score of 73. He was even par on the front nine with birdies on Nos. 1 and 7 before making seven pars on the back.

Detroit Lakes finished with a team score of 315. Pequot Lakes (322) and Staples-Motley (344) rounded out the top three spots. Tobkin, Justesen and Schons were awarded all-conference, while Stensgard was an honorable mention.
