Cross country: Steffl, Francis lead Detroit Lakes at Grand Forks' Border Battle

The Detroit Lakes cross country teams competed against programs from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Canada on Saturday in Grand Forks.

GRAND FORKS – Detroit Lakes cross country teams traveled to Grand Forks for Saturday’s Border Battle Invitational.

Teams from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Canada competed at Lincoln Park on Saturday. The Lakers girls took 11th place while the boys finished 16th.

Julia Steffl paced the Detroit Lakes girls with a time of 20:06.72 in 13th place. Marin Johnson clocked in at 22:40.97 in 56th, followed by Natalie Mohr at 22:41.67 in 57th.

Katli Skarie (23:07.02) and Maria Foltz (23:31.41) finished in the Lakers’ top five in 65th and 70th place. Lila Kallstrom (24:41.19) and Kira Wolf (24:21.42) also crossed the finish line with varsity times.

Brayden Francis led the Laker boys with a time of 18:15.05, which was good enough for 56th place. Mark Carlson (19:40.15, 94th) and Xander Jessen (19:40.62, 95th) finished back-to-back, while Hunter Hanson (19:47.22, 98th) and Micah Barberg (19:54.84, 99th) crossed the finish line. Ben Sundby rounded out the group with a time of 20:52.93 in 105th place.
