Football: Mahnomen-Waubun looks solid in early tests against Polk County West

The Mahnomen-Waubun football team beat Polk County West 22-7 to open the season last Thursday.

MAHNOMEN – The Mahnomen-Waubun football team handled an early-season test against a contender for the Thunderbirds' Section 8A crown well.

Mahnomen-Waubun (1-0) beat Polk County West (0-1) 22-7 behind a shutdown defensive performance. The Thunderbirds allowed just one fourth-quarter touchdown and 182 yards in a season-opening win.

Dennis Ashley started the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Jame Donner's 10-yard scamper and Ashley's two-point conversion pass to Carter Clark gave the Thunderbirds a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Polk County West cut the lead in half on Mike Gapps' 17-yard touchdown run 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Thunderbirds responded with a touchdown three minutes later when Curtis Mehr broke the plane.

Ashley was 5-for-8 passing for 72 yards and one interception. Tyson McArthur caught all five passes. Ashley also ran for 53 yards and a touchdown while collecting a tackle and an interception on defense.


Mehr led Mahnomen-Waubun in rushing with 71 yards on 13 carries. Donner collected 36 yards on seven attempts. Lex McDougall paced the defense with 10.5 tackles.

The Thunderbirds had 226 yards of total offense on 46 plays. They finished 4-for-10 on third down and 3-for-4 on fourth down.

Mahnomen-Waubun travels to Lake Park-Audubon in week two for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
