ALEXANDRIA – The Detroit Lakes girls golf team got an early measuring stick of where they stand against the reigning state champions on their own turf on Wednesday.
The Lakers traveled to Alexandria Golf Club and took second place behind the host school. Senior McKenna Mallow paced Detroit Lakes with an 82. She made three birdies on holes 3,2, 7 and 15 while also collecting seven pars on the day. Mallow’s score was enough to put her sixth overall in the field.
Sophomore Laura Syltie was six strokes behind Mallow at 88. After a shaky start, she made par on seven of the last 11 holes to finish ninth overall.
Eighth-grader Maddie McDougall wasn’t too far behind Syltie at 90. Her par on No. 9 was one of four on the day. Hannah Knoop also shot a 90 on the day. Knoop made a pair of birdies on Nos. 6 and 16. She also made par on six holes. Knoop and Syltie tied for 13th in the field.
Freshman Sydney Miller (96) and eighth-grader Tatum Gatheridge (104) did not factor into the scoring but finished in the fifth and sixth positions for the Lakers.

Alexandria won with a team score of 334. Detroit Lakes was in second at 350 and cleared third-place Wayzata by 10 strokes. Brainerd also finished with 360, while Chanhassen finished in fifth at 363.
Alexandria’s Hannah Boraas was the medalist with a score of 79. Wayzata’s Saachi Deshmukh, Chanhassen’s Madi Hicks and Brainerd’s Izzy Olson all tied for second with scores of 80.
