Girls golf: Mallow leads the way in final home meet, four Lakers set personal bests

McKenna Mallow sank four birdie putts on her way to an even-par medalist win at the Detroit Country Club on Tuesday.

DETROIT LAKES – McKenna Mallow turned in one of her best performances of the year in her final home meet.

The Detroit Lakes senior won the medalist honor on Tuesday afternoon with an even-par 71. She paced the Lakers to a team score of 314 to win their home invitational against four other teams.

Mallow played the first 11 holes at even-par or better. She made birdies on Nos. 1 and 5 and collected seven pars in that span. After bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13, Mallow got back to even par with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16. She ended her round with two pars to win the event by six strokes.

Sophomore Hanna Knoop wasn’t far behind Mallow in a tie for second place. She made a birdie on her final hole of the day to even her score with Pequot Lakes’ Genevieve Birkeland at 77.

One of Tuesday’s biggest surprises came from eighth-grader Tatum Gatheridge. She shot under 18 for the first time in her varsity career to finish fourth overall in the field. Her day ended on No. 15, where she made one of her three birdies to record a score of 79.

Laura Syltie finished just outside of the top 10 in the individual standings with an 87. The sophomore made four pars on the front and back nines to finish 16-over-par on the day. It was enough to edge out Pequot Lakes in the team standings by 21 strokes for the Lakers’ third team win at home this season.

The Lakers had eight golfers compete on Tuesday. Freshman Sydney Miller came in fifth on the team with an 89. Seventh graders Jaycie Sliper (93), Mya Boeke (99) and Becca Hunter (101) all had their personal best days on the course in a high school meet.

Next week, Detroit Lakes will head to Headwaters Golf Course for the Section 8-3A tournament. Alexandria, the defending state champion, is looking to reclaim its section title. The top team advances to Bunker Hills along with the top five individual scorers. Mallow competed at state in 2021 and took home a seventh-place finish.
