EAST GRAND FORKS – Despite a 2-0 loss, Detroit Lakes head soccer coach Ben Aastuen believes he saw his team play its best game of the season so far.

The Lakers (3-5) fell on the road against East Grand Forks (5-0-1). Kara Ellis scored two goals to lift the Green Wave to a win.

“Our team has taken a little time to find their groove, but we’re in it now,” Aastuen said. “These players want to play, want to work and want to win. The amount of grit and determination I see in these girls each and every day is incredible.”

Even in a loss, Aastuen was impressed with how his team played against an undefeated team in Section 8-2A.

“They’re becoming so competent in the game,” Aastuen said. “They pass well, they defend well and they’re communicating like a well-oiled machine. Based on our two seasons so far, you would’ve thought EGF would roll over DL, but it was the opposite. Our girls put a game together that pushed EGF to their limit. I’m so proud of each and every one of them.”

Junior Elle Bettcher made 10 saves in goal to keep the damage to a minimum.

“It is a little unfortunate how little we talk about Elle, and honestly how little I think about Elle,” Aastuen said. “As a coach, you look for the places that need improving–the places we can get better. Elle has been such a strong point of our team for so long, and she works so hard for this team. Not only does she work incredibly hard, but she also helps game plan by watching film and telling the coaches and players how to best defend another school’s playing styles. Her commitment to this team goes far beyond blocking the goals back at keeper. Her positioning in net and speed make her a tough person to get a ball by.
