CROSBY – The Detroit Lakes girls tennis team got its first win of the season on Thursday at the Crosby-Ironton triangular.
The Lakers beat Park Rapids 5-2 to split the road invite.
“It was great to get over the hump and win one,” Detroit Lakes head coach Greg Unruh said. “We had been so close in the first three matches we played. Our singles had been struggling, but we won 6 of 8 singles matches today against Park Rapids and Crosby-Ironton. Our lineup is starting to take shape. We had a couple of players record their first varsity wins today.”
Avery Klabunde won a pair of singles matches. She beat Park Rapids’ Ella Ehler 6-4, 6-2, and Crosby-Ironton’s Mary Fleming in three sets. Natalie Carlson got her first varsity win at No. 3 doubles with Claire Pazdernik. They beat Rachel Ulvin and Kate Dravis of Park Rapids in straight sets. Amaya LeCleir and Jaden Mercil also went 2-0 on the day in their respective matches.
The Lakers fell in a close battle against Crosby-Ironton to start the day. The Rangers pulled out a 4-3 win, sweeping all three doubles matches.

“Tennis lineups are a guessing game,” Unruh said. “I expected CI to go strong in singles against us, but they moved a good player into their doubles lineup, strengthening all three doubles teams. We lost No. 1 doubles in a super tie-break and lost a close match at No. 3 doubles. It went down to the wire with the Rangers, and we came out with the short end of the stick. On the bright side, we were 4-for-7 in tie-breakers today.”
