Girls tennis: Prowlers, Patriots handle Lakers to end regular season

The Detroit Lakes girls tennis team heads into the Section 8-2A tournament on Tuesday after suffering losses against Pequot Lakes and Thief River Falls.

THIEF RIVER FALLS – The Detroit Lakes girls tennis team ended its regular season with a hard-fought 5-2 loss against Thief River Falls.

Jaden Mercil picked up her 12th win of the season with a straight sets victory over Piper Greene at No. 4 singles. The team of Natalie Carlson and Avery Klabunde also knocked off Alana and Anna Lunsetter at No. 3 doubles in three sets.

“It was nice to get closer to (TRF) in the second meeting. They beat us 7-0 the first time we met,” Detroit Lakes head coach Greg Unruh said. “We lost a close match at No. 1 doubles or it might have been closer.”

The Lakers also faced one of their most formidable opponents on Thursday at Pequot Lakes. The Patriots cruised to a 7-0 victory, winning each matchup in straight sets.

Detroit Lakes gears up for the first round of the Section 8-2A tournament on Tuesday in Fargo. The Lakers take on Perham-New York Mills before individuals begin on Wednesday.
