Madi and Lexi Gerdes sign on to compete in two sports at the University of Minnesota-Morris

The Gerdes sisters will compete for the Cougars' swimming and diving and track and field programs.

DETROIT LAKES – Two more Lakers are headed to the collegiate ranks at the University of Minnesota-Morris next year.

Madi and Lexi Gerdes signed national letters of intent to swim and compete in track and field for the Cougars. The Gerdes sisters swam at the varsity level for six years before joining track last season. Both girls throw discus and shot put and will also throw javelin in college.

This fall, Madi and Lexi qualified for state in two events each. They were also named Section 8A swimmers of the year.

Jared Rubado is the sports editor for the Detroit Lakes Tribune and the Perham Focus. He moved to the area in September of 2021 after covering sports for the Alexandria Echo Press for nearly three years. Jared graduated from the University of Augustana in 2018 with degrees in journalism and sports managment.
