No. 2-seeded Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus assured a new Section 8AA wrestling team champion after defeating No. 3 Detroit Lakes 37-27 on the Road Crew’s home mats in Pine River Thursday, March 11.

Detroit Lakes was competing for the first time since Feb. 19 after finishing the regular season under COVID restrictions. The Lakers opened with a convincing win over Alexandria in the first round 48-21, but could not get ahead on the scoreboard against PLPRB.

The teams were deadlocked at 15-all after seven matches. The Road Crew had pins at 106 and 113, plus a tight 6-5 decision by Owen Carlson over DL’s Tyson Ullyott at 126.

The Lakers battled back with a Cole Weber second period fall at 120 and decisions by Bradly Swiers, Cade Jackson and Brody Ullyott.

Caleb Ruhr saved a bonus point in a 9-2 loss to Swiers. Karsen Kinyon held on enough against Jackson, losing 7-1, to keep a major decision four from going on the scoreboard.

Chance Abraham and DL’s Garett Nelson squared off at 152 to break the 15-all tie.

Abraham erased a 4-1 deficit to Nelson with a pin at 3:39 to create some Road Crew momentum up 21-15. They would not relinquish the lead.

Austin Staricha followed that match up with a close 6-5 decision over DL’s Thad Schlauderaff at 160.

DL’s lone undefeated wrestler, Blaine Henderson, improved to 24-0 on the season with a fall over Trey Tuchtenhagen to pull the Lakers back to within a decision down 24-21 with four matches to go.

The Crew’s Conner Tulenchik, ranked No. 1 in Class AA at 170-pounds, picked up an important bonus point wrestling up in a 16-7 major decision over Cale Abraham at 182.

PLPRB picked up decisions at 195 and a fall at 220 to make DL’s Andreas Barnett’s match moot. Barnett pinned Riley Peters in the first period at heavyweight.

After dropping the first two matches to Alexandria in the opener, DL won 10 of the 12 remaining duals to cruise into the semifinals.

Weber had his first of two pins on the night. Carsen Wold (138), Henderson (170), Henry Lee (195), Jeffrey Moen (220) and Barnett also recorded falls.

PLPRB will take on Thief River Falls in the section championship. The No. 1 Prowlers defeated No. 4 Perham 37-30 erasing a eight-point deficit with a decision and two falls in the final three matches.

The winner will face the winner of Section 7AA’s Princeton and Foley in the state preliminary round Saturday, March 13 in Pequot Lakes after both section finals.

Detroit Lakes (20-4) will now prepare for the individual portion of the section tournament Tuesday, March 16 at Pequot Lakes high school beginning at 1 p.m.
