Road Crew slip past Lakers in section final rematch

Two late pins propelled the Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus Road Crew to a one-point victory over Detroit Lakes in an exciting Mid-State Conference wrestling match Thursday night.

Two late pins propelled the Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus Road Crew to a one-point victory over Detroit Lakes in an exciting Mid-State Conference wrestling match Thursday night. The 37-36 defeat was the first loss in four matches for the Lakers. DL led 18-16 before the lead flip-flopped five times to the deciding match at 220 pounds. Dillon Nichols defeated DL’s Marcus Jasken in a 5-2 decision at 152 pounds to give the Crew a 19-18 lead. No. 2AA 152-pounder Parker Jackson got the lead back pinning Devyn Richards at 2:18 while leading Richards in the match by a score of 6-2. Jackson wrestled up at 160. DL was back in front 24-19. At 170, Nick Gravdahl pinned Laker sophomore Jordan Mackner in 59 seconds. Gravdahl is ranked No. 8AA at 160 pounds. The Road Crew took the lead back at 25-24. In a battle of seniors wrestling up in weight, DL’s Nathan Francis pinned Shawn Brandon 1:52 to extend give the Lakers their final lead at 30-25. Chris Foster got Jacob Hanson on his back in the second period and won by fall at 2:59 for the fifth lead change at 31-30 Road Crew. Joe Harrison sealed the match defeating DL’s Manuel Plaza by fall at 1:27 creating an insurmountable seven-point lead 37-30 with Laker heavyweight James Huwe still looking for his first match of the year. PLPRB was open at 285. Tyler Bellefeuille and Fabyon Greer got the Lakers off to a hot start winning by technical fall and major decision respectively.
No. 1 106-pounder Braydon Ortloff gave the Lakers a 12-0 wrestling up at 120 with a 6-2 decision. The latest state rankings were released Friday with Ortloff ranked No. 5 at 113. Jackson and Huwe remained at their positions at 152 and 285. The Lakers were open at 126. Detroit Lakes faced Wadena-Deer Creek in the nightcap defeating the Wolverines 44-12. The Road Crew defeated the Wolverines 63-15.
