No. 3 Rocori held No. 6 Little Falls to 22 yards rushing in a 27-14 victory in Section 8-4A football Tuesday evening at William R. Virant Memorial Field in Cold Spring. Little Falls jumped ahead taking advantage of a slow start by Rocori and led the Spartans 7-0 after the first quarter of play on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Braden Backowski to Landon Bjorge. Rocori responded with 27 unanswered points scoring a pair of touchdowns in the second and third quarters. Quarterback Connor Schoborg got the Spartans on the board with a 50-yard bomb at 9:54 of the second quarter to tie the game. Nicholas Warne ran in from the 13-yard line six minutes later for a 13-7 Rocori lead at the break. Schoborg struck again early in the third quarter connecting on a nine-yard touchdown pass with Nick Skluzacek at 9:30 and Tommy Wieber rushed for a five-yard score at 5:37. Backowski threw his second touchdown pass of the game for the final Flyers’ touchdown, a 16-yard pass to Wyatt Nelson. Rocori’s shut-down run defense created a large disparity in total yards with the Spartans outgaining the Flyers 389-156. Rocori rushed 52 times for 163 yards and Schoborg was 18-31 passing for 226 yards. Warne led the Spartan rushing attack gaining 75 yards on 19 carries. Weiber was 13-55 and Gunnar Feldhege carried the ball 11 times for 26 yards. Skluzacek recorded a game-high six receptions for 73 yards. Schoborg hit eight different receivers with completed passes. Backowski was 11-33 for 134 yards passing to lead the Flyer offense. Nelson made four catches for 67 yards. Little Falls’ season ends with an overall record of 2-7. The Spartans improved to 6-3 and Rocori earned a berth in the section semifinals Saturday night at Mollberg Field in Detroit Lakes. The No. 2 Lakers (7-1) and Rocori last met in the 2014 section final.
Quarterback Alex Budde scored three fourth quarter touchdowns to lead the Spartans to a 21-6 come-from-behind victory. The Lakers have a two-man effort under center with both Josh Bollig and Nick Aguilar both taking snaps in the season finale victory at Thief River Falls. Both players have been splitting reps at practice this week leaving an open quandary for the Rocori defense. Ben Nordmark has provided the Lakers with a consistent attack on offense and will surely be keyed upon by the Spartan defense. Nordmark scored the lone Laker touchdown and rushed for 78 yards in last year’s section final loss. The sophomore running back has eclipsed the 1,800-yard career rushing mark and is already 11th all-time in Laker rushing history. Nordmark (1,824 yards) needs 174 yards to move into the top 10 all-time and pass David Johnson who rushed for 1,998 yards from 1991-93. DL and Rocori have met three other times since 2005 with each team winning two games. Laker results Little Falls at Rocori, William R. Virant Memorial Field, Cold Spring, Minn., Tuesday, Oct. 13.
