Roth, Bison win inaugural Fall Kickoff

The NDSU University women's golf team fired an 18-hole score of 303 (15-over par) to capture the team title in the first-ever North Dakota State University Fall Kickoff Tournament on Monday, Sept. 7, at Fargo Country Club.

The NDSU University women's golf team fired an 18-hole score of 303 (15-over par) to capture the team title in the first-ever North Dakota State University Fall Kickoff Tournament on Monday, Sept. 7, at Fargo Country Club.

Sophomore Natalie Roth paced the Bison in the event, winning her first collegiate tournament after tallying a 2-under par 70.

The Lake Park, Minn., native shot 1-over on the front-nine holes before playing the back-nine at a scorching 3-under par. Roth tallied back-to-back birdies on holes 12 and 13 and also birdied the ninth hole.

Former Minnewaska golfer Jenna Janu (UND was the runner-up six strokes off of the pace set by Roth.

Senior Hailey Boner tied for third after shooting a 5-over par 77, while fellow senior Cassie Wurm and junior Maggie Crippen tied for fifth after each tallied a 6-over par 78, rounding out the top-10 finishers for NDSU.

Sophomore Trisa Hutchinson, of Detroit Lakes, and freshman Emma Groom, who both competed as individuals in the tournament, placed in the top-10, with Hutchinson tying for fifth with teammates Wurm and Crippen at 6-over par and Groom tying for ninth with a 7-over 79.

UND placed second in the team standings with a 309, while UND's second team was third with a 344 and Jamestown's second team was fourth with a 352. Jamestown rounded out the team standings, finishing fifth with a 365.

The tournament was also a Laker reunion for Hutchinson and Roth, with former teammates Matty Tschider of UND and Emma Thompson of the University of Jamestown in the field.

Tschider finished tied for 21st place with a +19 score of 91. Thompson shot 98 to place 27th.

NDSU is scheduled to travel to Williamsburg, Va., Sept. 13-15 to compete in the William & Mary Invitational at Kingsmill Resort Golf Course.
