BEMIDJI -- Sophomore Linaes Whiting had a hat trick to lead the Bemidji High School boys soccer team to a 7-1 win against Detroit Lakes on Monday.
The Lumberjacks (5-1) got off to a slower start than they would’ve liked against the Lakers (0-6-2), but halfway through the first half Whiting and company got back on track and never looked back.
Junior Leo Spry recorded his eighth goal of the season off an assist by senior Taylor Nord to make it 1-0 Bemidji at the 12 minute, 17 second mark of the first half.
Detroit Lakes would answer however when junior Tucker Bergquist blew behind the Lumberjacks defense and beat senior goalkeeper Cody Hedstrom 1-on-1 to make it a 1-1 match.
The Lumberjacks weren’t done building on their lead in the first half as Whiting scored goal No. 1 of his three with eight minutes left in the first half to go up 4-1 off an assist from senior Cole Mitchell.

Both he and Spry had chances for a hat trick, but Whiting was able to finish his off an assist from Spry at the 45:09 mark of the game.
Junior Hudson Dean capped the scoring for the day with a wide open look after two Lakers defenders ran into each other, creating a perfect opportunity for Dean to sneak one behind senior goalkeeper Dylan Skoda, who made 11 saves on the day.
On the opposite end, Hedstrom did face many more challenges from the Detroit Lakes offense, but he stepped up when needed.
Hedstrom made two saves in his fourth-straight win as starting goalkeeper.
