Cardinals spoil DL boys comeback

Joseph Westlund’s header with 10 minutes to play spoiled a Detroit Lakes comeback in a 3-2 victory for Alexandria at home over the Lakers in a Section 8A boys soccer match played at Alexandria Area high school Saturday, Aug. 27.

The Lakers erased an early, two-goal deficit scoring on both sides of the halftime horn.

Jackson Carlblom scored his first goal of the season on a header off a Kobe Braukmann corner kick in the 38th minute to cut the lead in half.

Carlblom assisted on Cole Metelak’s second tally of the year to tie the game sending a through ball to Metelak who scored in close five minutes into the second half.

The Cardinals nabbed the lead early when Jacob Siira scored on a Graham Peterson feed three minutes into the game. Alex added a second goal by way of penalty kick on a hand ball call on the Lakers.

The Cardinals won the game out of a corner kick that found Westlund for a header directed past DL keeper Trey Seebold in the 70th minute.

DL led in shots on goal 7-6; corners were 4-3 DL and Seebold made four saves.

DL falls to 1-1; Alex improves to 2-0. The Lakers face defending Section 8A champions Bemidji at home Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.
