Laker girls shutout Crookston on the road

Detroit Lakes picked up back-to-back wins for the second time this season to move to 4-1 on the season behind a hat trick by junior attacker Nicole Swanson at Crookston in a 4-0 shutout of the Pirates in a Section 8A matchup Thursday, Sept. 6.

Swanson scored seven minutes into the game on an assist by Emily Larson to get on the board early. Six minutes later Swanson earned a penalty kick that was taken by Larson who scored her first goal since returning from a knee injury early last season.

Larson missed both the soccer and basketball seasons in 2017 and returned to the golf team in the spring. She plays with a brace on her left leg and is playing at less than 100 percent on the leg but does have bursts of speed that made her dangerous on the pitch and basketball court.

DL led 2-0 at the break and in the 45th minute, Larson earned a penalty kick returning the favor to Swanson who tallied her second of the game.

Three minutes later Swanson got loose and scored on a breakaway to seal the victory completing her hat trick.

Both penalties were called on hand balls.

The game was called with 21-minutes, 36-seconds remaining due to lightning. It was the second straight year a game at Crookston was interrupted due to inclement weather.

The Pirates fall to 0-3 on the season.

The Lakers have a week off before facing last year’s Section 8A runners-up East Grand Forks Thursday, Sept. 13 at home.
