DL girls advance to rematch with EGF

DL's Emily Larson sprints down the left side of the pitch to create a scoring opportunity during DL's Section 8A victory over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Cass Lake-Bena Thursday, Oct. 11.

No. 2 Detroit Lakes had no trouble in a 6-0 opening round Section 8A victory over a short-handed No. 7 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley club Thursday night at Rotary Soccer Park.

The Wolves played one player short after dressing only 10 for the game.

The Lakers scored five times in the first half to put the game on ice early.

Kerrigan Hallisey put DL on the board in the opening three minutes after taking a pass from Ava Steinmetz for a 1-0 lead. Emily Larson worked the back line and centered a pass to Sydney Brininger who scored for a 2-0 advantage.

Matteya Borah scored in between a pair of Steinmetz goals as the DL duo combined in rapid fire succession to give the Lakers a comfortable lead going to the break.

Abigail Larson had the lone goal of the second half scoring in the 66th minute.

ANNIE PAULSON (4), LILY BURNS, right.

DL strikers took more than 40 shots in the game and held the Wolves to only one each half.

The Lakers were awarded 10 corner kicks to none for their opponents.

DL gets a testy rematch with No. 3 East Grand Forks in the next round. The Green Wave defeated No. 6 Hillcrest Lutheran Academy 5-0 to advance.

Both meetings between DL and EGF have gone to overtime this year ending in a 3-3 draw in DL on Sept. 13 and a 3-2 Laker victory at EGF on a Hallisey game-winner Sept. 25.

The rivals face each other Saturday, Oct. 13 back at Rotary Field where DL is 5-1-2 this year.

In the top half of the bracket, No. 1 Bemidji blanked No. 8 Crookston 10-0 at Bemidji State University. The Jacks face No. 5 Fergus Falls after the Otters knocked out No. 4 Alexandria 2-1 in a shootout.

No. 3 St. Cloud Apollo defeated No. 6 Rocori 5-0. No. 2 St. Cloud Cathedral shutout No. 7 St. John’s Prep 10-0.
