Detroit Lakes repeated as the champions of the upper division of the Seniors Softball Tournament held at Snappy Park, August 20-21.

Twelve teams from Manitoba, St Paul, Detroit Lakes, Bemidji, and Callaway participated for two days, each playing three games Monday and two playoff games each on Tuesday.

Detroit Lakes went undefeated and took the title with a hard earned win over Canada’s 55 FlashBacks team.

Callaway won the middle division with a decisive 24-5 win over the team from Lee River, Manitoba.

The annual event is hosted by a group from Winnipeg, Canada, which brought four large bus loads of players, fans, umpires and organizers from Manitoba to play softball against teams in the lakes area.

A short memorial was held for long time tournament organizer, manager, and senior softball player, Ross McIver, from Manitoba who had passed away prior to the event.

All male players were required to be 55 years old and over, but many of the players were between 70 and 80-years-old, and a growing number were playing well into their 80’s.

At least one female player was required on each team. The event has been held at Snappy Park since the summer of 2000, and many of the players have been coming to Detroit Lakes for the event since it was first initiated.
