Thunderbirds pound out 40 hits in softball sweep at LP-A
Mahnomen-Waubun swept a Pine to Prairie Conference doubleheader at Lake Park Audubon putting up double figures in the run column in both games defeating the Raiders 19-8 and 12-2 Thursday, April 25 in Lake Park.
The teams traded eight runs each in the first two innings playing to a deadlock heading to the top of the third.
The Thunderbirds put up crooked numbers in all five innings of play while holding the Raiders off the scoreboard the remainder of the game.
Makena Spaeth led the Thunderbirds going 4-4 with a triple and one RBI. She stole two bases and scored five runs. Molly Mertens was 4-5. with two RBI and three runs scored. Spaeth was also credited with the pitching victory throwing all five innings.
Six Thunderbirds had multi-hit games as Mahnomen-Waubun pounded out 21 hits in the game.
Kailee Lefebvre, Maddie Thompson and Carli Ecker had two hits each for LP-A. Lefebvre, Kelsey Thompson and Victoria Sheikh each scored twice.
The Thunderbird offense continued to bash the ball recording 19 hits in game two and finishing the sweep by mercy rule.
The Raiders opened the scoring in the top of the first on a double steal by Lefebvre to second base bring home Thompson. LP-A’s 1-0 lead held until the third inning.
The Thunderbirds used extra base hits to take a 3-1 lead on triples by Brittany Lefebrve and Sofia Bly, along with a double from Nicole Swedberg.
Mahnomen-Waubun blew up a close game scoring nine runs in the final two frames to polish off the victory.
Spaeth completed a big day at the plate going 4-4 with a double, triple, two RBI and three runs scored.
The Thunderbirds improved to 3-1. The Raiders fall to 1-2 after opening the season with a 14-9 victory over Bagley.
