The Detroit Lakes softball team picked up a pair of Mid-State Conference victories on the road in two high-scoring games defeating Staples-Motley 14-11 and 17-6 in Staples Tuesday, May 4.

The Lakers pounded out hits in double figures in both games, collecting a dozen in the opener and 14 in the nightcap.

The wins were big for a very young team that has no returning players from the Lakers’ 2019 state tournament team. DL has also lost three players to illness and injury, two of which, Ella Okeson and starting pitcher Hailey Smith, are potentially out for the remainder of the season.

A nine-run fourth inning was the difference in game one.

Leadoff hitter Emma Coley generated a big part of the offense going 3-3 at the plate with four runs scored, three stolen bases, a double, home run and a sacrifice fly.

Siri Vagle went 2-4 at the plate, scoring twice and knocking in a pair to go with four stolen bases.

Seven different Lakers recorded hits in the game.

Sophomore Maddy Bellanger earned the pitching victory in both games. Sydney Borgmann pitched two innings of scoreless relief in the second game. The duo held the Cardinals to only four hits.

The Lakers unloaded early scoring 15 of their 17 runs in the first two innings to cruise to the doubleheader sweep.

The top of the order proved difficult to get out for the Cardinals. Coley was 3-3 with 3 runs, a triple, two stolen bases and one RBI to cap a big day at the plate.

Vagle was 2-4 with two runs scored, two steals and one RBI.

Bellanger was 24 with two steals batting third.

Sydney Haus went 2-3 with two steals.

Eight different Lakers touched home at least twice.

Detroit Lakes (2-6) is home to face Pequot Lakes (9-4) at Snappy Park Thursday, May 6.
