The top two finishes in the breaststroke and a 400-freestyle win in the final two events aided Moorhead in a close boys swimming and diving 95-90 victory over Detroit Lakes Friday night at the DLCCC pool. The Spuds held a slim 87-84 lead after Kyle Johnson and Anthony Johnson put up 10 points finishing first and second, respectively, in the breaststroke. The Lakers held third and fourth place for five points with Jared Olson and Quinn Bakken. Chris Harlicker of Moorhead added one point for a fifth place finish. The Spuds sealed the meet with the top 400-free relay time of 3:40.04, edging the Lakers’ A team of Ethan McCullough, Zane Freeman, Caleb Howard and Jared Olson by 1.64 seconds and a four-point difference. The Laker B team of Spencer Heimark, Tucker Strawsell, Josten Bellefeuille, and Tanner Olson placed third adding the final two points of the meet in a time of 4:17.87.
Moorhead earned the victory outscoring the Lakers 19-12 in the final two events. The Spuds also took the top spot in every event save three. Senior captain Howard swam 1:05.60 to win the backstroke for DL and also won the 100-freestyle in a time of 53.84. Freeman finished atop the diving standings with a score of 254.25 defeating Moorhead’s Brian Hoffman 220.20. Austin Gedrose scored 178.60 for third place and Edward Johnson placed fourth with 111.30. The Laker trio of sophomore Freeman and the two freshmen took 11 of 15 possible diving points. The Laker junior varsity picked up a victory beating the Spuds 57-43. The swim team is off for the rest of 2014 and will resume competition the second week of January.
