Pine to Palmers in the top 20

Former Pine to Palm champion Tom Hoge jumped into contention shooting a 6-under 66 in the third round of the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio Saturday, April 3.

Hoge birdied half the course in the round, including five straight on holes 5 through 9.

Hoge was the champion at Detroit Country Club in 2009 and the 2010 medalist and runner-up.

He finished tied for 12th at 7-under and moved inside the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career (98th).

Erik Van Rooyen, the 2011 Pine to Palm medalist, was a stroke back at 6-under, tied for 14th place.

Trasamar earns Canadian tour exemption

At the Mackenzie Tour PGA Canada Qualifying Tournament Thursday, April 1, Dylan Healey would have had the round of the day if it weren’t for Jon Trasamar. The Blue Earth native, a former University of Minnesota golfer, made six birdies on the front nine for a 6-under 30 and added four more on the back to shoot his low-round-of-the-tournament 62 to grab a share of the third round lead.

Trasamar was the 2013 medalist and champion at the Pine to Palm.

He shot a final-round, 4-over 76 and dropped to seventh place but the finish allows him to be conditionally exempt on the tour this season.

The Birchmont is full

Registration for the 97th Birchmont golf tournament (July 26-31) in Bemidji is full. The tournament is the first of the three resort tour stops including The Resorters (100th annual Aug. 1-7) in Alexandria and the Pine to Palm (89th Aug. 9-15). Kerzman PR’s for Cobbers

Junior Jacob Kerzman (Detroit Lakes) posted a personal record in the discus with a mark of 137-11 to place 10th and was eighth in the hammer throw at 138-07 at the NDSU Spring Classic Friday, April 2.

Senior Connor Haugrud (Detroit Lakes) finished ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:01.39.

Guler pulling double duty

Freshman Maddie Guler (Pelican Rapids) competed in her second collegiate track meet at the NDSU Spring Classic. Guler, who played on the Cobber women's basketball team in the winter, was 10th in the 100m at 13.59 and ran a 28.16 in the 200 meters. Her 100 time is the 10th fastest in the MIAC this year.

Prussia consistent at Jamestown

Jamestown junior Sydney Prussia (Detroit Lakes) is having another stellar season at the plate for the Jimmies’ softball team. Prussia is batting .439 for the 21-7 Jimmies in 24 games played, she is hitting 29-66 with 7 doubles, 1 triple, 22 runs scored, 8 RBI and 6 stolen bags.

Lyngass wraps career at UWLC

Senior Molly Lyngaas completed her gymnastics career by tying for fourth place (9.100) on the uneven parallel bars as the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse gymnastics team ended its season with a dual victory at Hamline University. Lyngaas battled injuries her entire career and was not sure a year ago if she could compete her senior season. She has been a testament to toughness and excellence throughout her career.

Alex College adds fishing

Alexandria Technical & Community College is adding to its Legends Athletics portfolio with Collegiate Competitive Fishing set to begin this fall 2021 season.

Alexandria College will be the first two-year college in Minnesota to offer Competitive Fishing. Also setting the Legends program apart is secure on-campus sporting equipment storage for boats and a dedicated coach in Joe Scegura, a Mechatronics program instructor with years of fishing and guide experience.
