The Frazee Hornets battled in one of the longest games in school history, looking for a first win of the season, but lost 42-36 to the Osakis Silverstreaks in a wild six overtime affair Friday night at home. The teams duked it out in the first half with matching scores each quarter and played to a stalemate in the second half. "We played a back and forth game for the record books,” Frazee head coach Jim Jacobson said. “We don't have official records on the longest game in Frazee history, but I would feel safe saying this is definitely in the top two.”     “The team responded with a ton of character tonight,” Osakis head coach Bill Infanger said. “This game was a grinder from beginning to end and I’m so proud of our guys and how they battled through this rollercoaster of a game. I believe a lot of our guys grew as competitors tonight; maybe finding something inside they didn’t know they had.” Osakis put the brakes on the Frazee offense in the sixth overtime stopping Jeff Marshall and a pass from Logan Wacker to Tanner Bachmann for no gain. Wacker made passing attempts on third and fourth down to no avail. With the win on the line, Glenn Seela rushed to the Frazee one-yard line on first down. Frazee’s defense responded with a three-yard loss on Seela’s next attempt forcing third and goal from the four. Haden Hendricks connected with Gage Larson for the winning touchdown on the ensuing play via the pass to end a thriller. “We can't say enough about our seniors, their leadership was tremendous,” said Jacobson. “We gave a true team effort through and through and we became a football team.”  Frazee scored first in overtime on a Wacker pass to Rory Drewes from the 11-yard line. Wacker added two points on a run for a 22-14 lead. Osakis scored on their second play when Brendon Coyer rushed seven yards for a touchdown. Seela tied the game on the conversion. The second overtime was filled with extended drama for both teams as each managed fourth down plays for scores and matching point-after misses. Hendricks found Larson from the 10-yard line with a pass to put Osakis up 28-22. Frazee faced fourth-and-14 with the game on the line and Nguyen slipped into the end zone to tie the score. A false start penalty backed Frazee up five yards and the conversion failed. The third and fourth overtimes had no scoring. Wacker was picked off by Maxwell Schwartz on third down. Frazee’s defense stood tall on fourth-and-one to end the third extra session. Wacker was stuffed on fourth-and-three in the fourth OT. The Hornets again came up big on fourth-and-one forcing an incomplete pass from Hendricks.            With game momentum, Tanner Bachmann passed to Wacker for a touchdown on Frazee’s first play and a 36-28 lead after a Jeff Marshall PAT run. Frazee had a chance for a third consecutive fourth down stop with Osakis needing six yards. Seela scored from the six and added the PAT run to tie the game at 36-36. The teams combined for 28 points in the first four quarters of the game and scored a total of 50 points in the six overtime periods.
“Our kids never gave up and gave everything they had,” said Jacobson. “Most of our football games are about 130 plays, we played 190 last night.  We had some chances that we took advantage of and came up with some tremendous stops defensively, getting two stops in overtime when they had 4th-and-one from the one.”  Hendricks got the Silverstreaks on the board at 7:23 of the first quarter on a rugby scrum dive off left tackle. Seela added the conversion for an 8-0 lead. Frazee answered three minutes later at 4:03 on a Nathan Nguyen run around the left end. Nguyen dove across the goal line for the score and Wacker tied the game on the two-point conversion. Frazee took an early second quarter lead 23 seconds in on a four-yard scoring run by Charlton Wake. Hendricks answered three minutes before halftime connecting with Larson from 28 yards out. Both teams missed PATs and went to the half tied at 14-14. “Both teams had so many opportunities to pack it in and let the other team have it, but neither team ever gave up,” Infanger said. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve had as a coach to be a part of this game.” The Hornets got scoring contributions from some new names Friday night. Three players scored their first career touchdowns last night: Wake, Nguyen, and Drewes. “We spread the ball around to a lot of different guys,” said Jacobson. “Defensively, we hung in there and really stepped up when it mattered. We have a lot of positive things we can take from this game and we will take one step forward next week." Frazee falls to 0-5 and will travel to Wadena Friday, Sept. 25 to take on the Wolverines in a battle of winless teams. Wadena-Deer Creek is coming off a 57-16 loss at Hawley and a 38-8 loss at home to Osakis. The Silverstreaks improve to 3-2 and host the 4-1 Rebels from Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton.
