Senior Tucker Strawsell continued to pace the Detroit Lakes swimming and diving team garnering all-conference honors in the 500-freestyle at Friday’s Mid-State Conference Championships in Park Rapids.

Strawsell swam a winning time of 5:19.37 for first place defeating runner-up Thomas Williams of Park Rapids by 13 seconds. He was the lone Laker and only swimmer or diver not on the host team, to capture an event but the remainder of the DL team posted plenty of top three honorable mention finishes.

Strawsell and teammate Lance Parzyck finished two-three in the 200-freestyle.

DL’s top two medley relay teams placed second and third, as did the 200-free relay teams. A meet record was set by the winning Park Rapids 200 team of Spencer Fritze, Zach Behrens, Zach Fritze and Matthew Benson (1:32.83). DL’s 2013 squad ( Mike Okeson, Austin McCullough, Carter Krengel, Isaac Clem) held the former mark of 1:34.36.

The Laker foursome of Gabe Kitzmann, Tanner Olson, Parzyck and Strawsell took runner-up honors in the 400-free relay (3:41.26). The Panthers set a meet record winning the 400 in 3:29.45 knocking off a mark set in 2012 by former Lakers Brandon Olson, Travis King, Carter Krengel and Quillan Oak (3:29.97).

Cole Metelak placed third in diving with a score of 328.65.

Tanner Olson touched third in the 50-free (24.45). Park Rapids’ Spencer Fritze was the winner and finished two-hundredths (23.02) from the meet record. That record is held by DL’s Clem (23.00), set in 2013.

Landon Lindsey was the lone Laker in the top four butterfly finishes with three Panther swimmers. Lindsey placed second in a time of 1:00.05.

Gabe Kitzmann (54.22) and Tanner Olson (54.78) finished in succession behind 100-freestyle winner Matthew Benson of Park Rapids (50.93).

Four Lakers were in the top six backstroke places led by John Gulon in third (1:02.57).

Garrett Bakken (1:12.88) and Parzyck (1:13.03) took second and third in the breaststroke.

Park Rapids defended their team title scoring 713 points to Detroit Lakes with 591 and Perham/NY Mills in third scoring 307.

DL is off until the Section 5A championships in Alexandria Feb. 23-24.
