Thief River Falls pulled away late in a highly competitive swimming and diving matchup defeating Detroit Lakes 84-64 at the DLCCC Aquatic Center Thursday, Feb. 25.

The Prowlers held a slim seven-point lead heading into the final four events and outscored the Lakers 12-2 with first and second place finishes in the 200-freestyle relay to finally get a cushion on the scoreboard.

“Time drops galore from the boys, and the divers made some great headway,” Laker head coach Carol Fischer said. “The boys are on a roll at the right time of the season. Most of them are dropping more time just when they need to before the section meet.”

DL swimmers and divers recorded a season-high four event wins.

Freshman Ryan Erickson dropped over 13.5 seconds in the 200 IM winning in a time of 2:34.55.

Erickson also shaved off over six and a half seconds in a 100 butterfly runner-up finish in 1:19.14.

“He has really stepped up as a racer and it's totally fun to watch him go,” Fischer said.

Sophomore Gregory Simons (126.00) and eighth-grader Carson Jensen (100.30) finished one-two in diving. Simons picked up the win in his first career varsity competition.

“Our divers are great teammates who not only are becoming more confident but are willing to step up and swim where the team needs them,” said Fischer. “First-year diver Gregory Simons made an impressive first varsity effort.”

Eighth-graders Zariah Wouters (7:10.79) and Tony McLeod (7:43.76) also went one-two with 500-free winning times.

“Our two 500 freestylers this meet were our biggest time droppers,” Fischer said. “Zariah dropped nearly 17 seconds and Tony McLeod nearly 24 seconds from the times they swam earlier in the season.”

Micah Barberg shaved off time in his 50 free as the top Laker in fourth place (28.00) and kicked into gear in the 100-backstroke finishing with a time that seemed to surprise him, according to Fischer, dropping just under two seconds to win in 1:12.29.

Seventh-grader Zane Roberts dropped over five seconds in his 100 breaststroke placing second in a time of 1:25.95.

Detroit Lakes hosts its final home meet of the regular season Tuesday, March 2 against Bemidji.
