To say first-year Sydney Busker (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes) has had a solid start to her rookie campaign with the St. Catherine Unviersity golf team would be an understatement. In her first three weeks of competition, Busker leads the team with a 78.2 (+6) average and has shot below 80 in five of her six rounds played. This weekend, Busker tied for first at the Division III Classic hosted by Carleton College in Lake City, Minnesota, and also tied a school record. For her outstanding performance, Busker has been recognized by the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) sports information directors as the MIAC Women's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
All season long, Busker has been the team's most consistent golfer and this weekend it paid off. She ended the two-day tournament with a score of 152 (+8) that tied teammate Abby Conzemius' record performance from a week ago. Busker's score was also good enough to tie for first place with three other golfers in a field of 92 competitors. On the opening day, Busker carded a career-best 75 (+3) that was tied for the second-best on the day and ranks third-best for 18 holes at St. Kate's. She followed up her Saturday performance with a 77 (+5) to earn her share of the top spot in the standings and her first top-10 finish of the year. Busker helped the Wildcats score a third-place team finish after dropping 15 strokes Sunday to move ahead of Wartburg College. The Wildcats recorded a 637 (+61) that ranks second all-time at St. Kate's thanks to Busker's contributions. Thanks to her performance Saturday and Sunday, Busker's team-leading average now ranks in the top 10 in MIAC this season. Busker and the Wildcats return to action this weekend for their final competition before the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships beginning Oct. 2. The Wildcats remain local Saturday and Sunday playing in the College City Challenge at Bellwood Oaks Golf Club in Hastings, Minnesota.
