The Detroit Lakes’ offense scored on its opening three drives and the Laker defense shut the door late in a 21-14 team-effort victory over Pequot Lakes Friday night at Mollberg Field. “We just had to keep plugging away and we got it done,” Laker senior defensive tackle Carson Disse said. DL’s defense was the key to the win in the second half and despite a few hiccups on offense, the Lakers found a way to win and improve to 4-1. “It’s good and we’ve got so much more room for improvement,” said Disse. The Pequot Lakes defense had their hands full trying to control the Laker running game. After last week’s 248 yard, three-touchdown performance at Park Rapids, Laker sophomore running back Ben Nordmark was in focus for the Patriot defense, but the Lakers scored twice passing the ball and were able to decoy with Nordmark to take an early lead.
Nordmark, however, got his chunks of turf rushing for a game-high 151 yards on 23 carries, his fifth 100-yard rushing game this season with a long run of 27 yards on the night. His mate in the backfield junior Carson Tunheim got the Lakers on the board at 8:15 of the first quarter on a seven-yard run. DL’s point after kick was no good. Pequot Lakes answered on the ensuing drive with a big play on fourth-and-one near midfield when Chad Christianson broke loose for a 56-yard score. A CJ Borleis kick gave Pequot Lakes their only lead of the game at 7-6. The lead was temporary as DL drove down the field and went up 14-7 on a 27-yard hookup to Jacob Richter from quarterback Josh Bollig and Bollig found Isaac Cihak for the conversion. Bollig and Richter connected again at 7:52 of the second quarter from eight yards out to put the Lakers up 21-7. The final DL drive of the half ended on fourth down and goal from the 10-yard line in the waning seconds. A third attempt to Richter from Bollig was incomplete in the back of the end zone. The Patriot defense stiffened in the second half not allowing any points and the Laker offense was flagged with penalties at key points in drives to hamper progress. The Laker defense responded with two interceptions by Kai McLeod and Josh Bollig, along with back-to-back drive-busting sacks to win the game late. Christianson had the only score of the second half, his second of the game, on a three-yard run over left tackle to cut the Laker lead to 21-14 with 9:55 remaining in the third quarter. Christianson was an effective target in the passing game, especially on third down, to add 49 yards receiving to his 83 yards rushing on 15 carries and two touchdowns. McLeod negated a Pequot chance to tie with an interception of Borleis at the Laker 16-yard line late in the third quarter at 2:32. Pequot Lakes threatened early in the fourth quarter on fourth and eight from the Laker 23. A bad snap got under Borleis in the shotgun formation and after scrambling he was picked off by Bollig in the red zone to end the threat with 9:44 to play. The Laker offense sputtered picking up four flags, two that negated first downs on the drive, and punted the ball back with 4:49 left on the clock. The final Pequot push reached the Laker nine-yard line for first-and-goal, but a motion penalty backed up the Patriots five yards. The Lakers strung out a Chirstianson run for a loss of two yards after an incomplete pass to set up third and goal from the 16. Isaac Cihak blitzed and sacked Borleis for a huge 14-yard loss and Pequot was down to a final attempt on fourth down and goal from the 30. Carson Disse corralled Borleis to ice the game with a sack allowing Bollig to kneel under center for the win. “Holy cow, the coaches told us we’re getting in there; I told my other defensive tackle we’re going, this is time, and we got it done,” said Disse.
