MOORHEAD - The Spuds have had the Lakers number by the smallest of margins for three consecutive matches. Moorhead got that third 4-3 win over the Laker girls’ tennis team Thursday.
“We seem to stick with them every time, but can't pick up that fourth win,” Head Coach Tanner Beauchman said.
Detroit Lakes took two of three doubles matches.
Top doubles pair Emily Seebold and Emma Maguire won in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Devree Bunnis and Carolyn Kinney won their two-doubles match in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.
“Our top two doubles teams continued their successful seasons. They are playing very aggressive and seem ready for our sectional tournament.”
Adrianna Brehm picked up her first career varsity singles win at four-singles 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 over Melissa Glatt.
Brehm normally plays at three-doubles.
“We decided to play her in singles. Adrianna is very athletic and can run down a lot of balls, making things difficult for her opponent. She won her match by outworking her opponent.”
The Spuds swept the top three singles matches in straight sets to gain the victory.
“We had to grind to pick up our three wins. In all three matches, we struggled in the second set, and had to win in a third set.”
Detroit Lakes is currently seeded sixth in the subsection; Moorhead is fifth. The loss is a tough one in that a win would have vaulted the Lakers into the five seed.
The Section Tournaments are coming up Oct. 6-7 in Grand Forks.
