Laker tennis opens season at Hwy 10 tournament
The Detroit Lakes girls tennis team opened the season at the Highway 10 tournament played in Staples Wednesday, Aug. 22.
Josey Allen won two of three matches to lead the four Lakers singles players with a second place finish. Allen typically plays doubles but stepped into the No. 4 position.
“Josey looked really good,” head coach Tanner Beauchman said. “She did a good job of moving the ball around and mixing up her shots. She won her first two rounds in straight sets before falling to Osakis in the final. Knowing she is capable of playing at the level in singles gives us some flexibility with our lineup.”
One hole in the singles’ lineup was the absence of Shelby Busker who missed the first week of the season due to amateur golf tournament schedule.
“We shifted some people around and had some good results,” Beauchman said.
The senior softball infield and basketball backcourt duo of Mercedez Bellanger and Lauryn Manning picked up a pair of wins in three matches at No. 3 doubles. Bellanger and Manning may surprise a few people as the pick up the nuances of tennis in their first year on the team.
“Mercedez and Lauryn had a great tournament,” Beauchman said. “The seniors are both new to our team and are still learning the game. They are both incredibly athletic and use it well to find ways to win points. The fact they are this good after a week of practice is impressive. When they start to learn the intricacies of the game they could be a really scary team.”
The Lakers host Fergus Falls Thursday, Aug. 23 in the first dual at home this season.
